Is Peppermint Tea Safe To Drink?

Pepperment tea is an infusion or a tisane of the peppermint plant. It's an herbal tea and is also referred to as the mint tea. Peppermint tea is known for its minty flavor. It offers a lot of health benefits to the human body, especially to our digestive system.

Peppermint leaves are not only used for its tea. The leaves and the oil derived from the this plant are also used to cure headaches, muscle and joint pains, insect bits, rashes, and so many more. Needless to say, peppermint tea is a safe drink, hot or cold.

There are a few side

effects of drinking TOO MUCH of this tea, however. Such are the following below:

-Peppermint tea is generally safe to drink. It brings comfort to a hyperacidic stomach with indications for example of flatulence, nausea, vomiting or heartburns. However, drinking too much of this tea may not be advisable to a person with gastro esophageal reflux disease or GERD. As the tea has a soothing effect to the stomach, having too relaxed stomach muscles may allow acid to flow upwards to the esophagus, thus triggering an episode.

-Like most teas, take caution in drinking peppermint to if you are pregnant. The relaxing effect of tea may cause stimulation to the uterus which may increases the risk of a miscarriage.

What tea is safe for pregnancy? There is a short list of teas

that can be taken during pregnancy. Peppermint tea is already one of them, along with ginger tea, roasted barley and thyme. On the other hand, other herbal tea such as anise, chamomile, and lemongrass are advised be avoided.

Yet again, it is advised to lessen the daily intake of any kind of tea (and caffeinated drinks for that matter) in general, to safeguard a successful pregnancy.

-Peppermint tea is also beneficial to kidney and liver functions. The tea helps detoxify our bodies by improving the flow of bile and liver enzymes. However, peppermint may interfere with certain drugs that are processed by the liver. When one is under medication, especially concerning the liver and the kidneys, it is best to seek doctor’s advice regarding first regarding tea consumption.
